fatal: could not read Username for 'https://github.com': No such file or directory

Git logo

If all of a sudden you are unable to clone or push repos and you recently downloaded the latest version of msysgit (AKA Git for Windows) you are not alone.

As discussed here and confirmed here, this appears to be a bug in the 1.85.2 build, which consequently is the latest available build linking from github, which likely means that thousands of developers since the release of 1.85.2 are impacted.

3 options, from simplest on down:

1. Uninstall 1.85.2 and downgrade to a previous version.

2. Switch over to SSH instead.

3. Apply the patch “discussed” here.

Personally, I chose 2 out of sheer laziness and opted out of 3 due to a general lack of motivation resulting from what appears to be more interest in pedantic redirection and passive aggressive replies from project representation than communication and spirit of collaboration (which is supposed to be what OSS is all about).

Hopefully this will be fixed in a new build soon. Hope this helps.

# re: fatal: could not read Username for 'https://github.com': No such file or directory

Hi Rick,

Thanks for providing this info. I tried to apply the patch but it doesn't work. And quite frankly, the guys in the discussion board don't really seem that friendly. I've tried to push and fix changes provided by them and stack overflow but I still get the same error. I was wondering if you're able to help out.

Here was my process

1) I installed git through some google code url
2) I was told to install cygwin so I did
3) After after problems I read to try mysgit

(no uninstalling has happened)

4) I tried the patch but after trying to to push it didn't work. Mind you, I'm able to clone repos on github but git push origin doesn't work and it's giving me this error message "re: fatal: could not read Username for 'https://github.com': No such file or directory"

Here's what I want to do

Uninstall cygwin and uninstall Git 1.85.2 and Install 1.7.11. I'm assuming just doing an install on 1.7.11 will not override 1.85.2

If I were in unistall cygwin and git 1.85.2 would you be help me out with how to go about it? I'm new to the windows system and dev ops stuff so being explicit will be help. I normally work on a Mac.

Thanks!

Gary
